This three-week-long tournament takes our longest-running improv show and audience favorite, TheatreSports, and tournament-ifies it into a nonstop, no-holds-barred, spectacle-laden comedy competition where our panel of improv judges determines not only which team features the funniest performers of the night, but the funniest performers of the year here at Dad’s Garage!

Your suggestions fuel the show as we decide who of the best improvisers in the city are the comedy champions!

This year, each team will compete against one another three times to determine who competes in the final four semifinals. Then, the finals between the top two teams will take place on January 31, and all are invited to celebrate the winners and a tournament well-performed at a massive improv jam and party immediately after the tournament’s conclusion!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Every theatre hosts TheatreSports in a slightly different way, but this is how we do it:

Every TheatreSports performance features two teams of improvisers going head to head for the loudest laughter and applause. Every round, the captains of each improv team issues challenges to the opposing team to incorporate into their improv scene for that round. Each scene is ranked on a scale of one to five—with five as the highest possible score. The team with the highest score wins!

  • Well, the rules change a little each year depending on the number of teams.

However, every team competes against one another at least once in the early rounds, and their cumulative scores for every performance in the tournament determines which teams advance to the finals!

Every performance is hosted by a moderator (or panel of judges, in the tournament’s case - we also like to dress up as judges just because) that oversees the competition, tallies votes, and dispenses the scum box whenever needed.

  • The scum box is a beloved box placed on the heads of improvisers—or patrons—who get too rowdy during a scene or with their suggestions. It doesn’t come out every performance, but TheatreSports can get pretty intense!

Did you know we’re the only theatre in the southeast certified to perform TheatreSports? We’re part of an international cohort and darn proud of it.
