This three-week-long tournament takes our longest-running improv show and audience favorite, TheatreSports, and tournament-ifies it into a nonstop, no-holds-barred, spectacle-laden comedy competition where you, the audience, determine not only which team features the funniest performers of the night, but the funniest performers of the year here at Dad’s Garage!

Your suggestions fuel the show, and your applause determines who of the best improvisers in the city are the comedy champions!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Every theatre hosts TheatreSports in a slightly different way, but this is how we do it: every performance is hosted by a moderator (or panel of judges, in the tournament’s case - we also like to dress up as judges just because) that oversees the competition, tallies audience votes, and dispenses the scum box whenever needed.

Audience voting occurs at the end of each scene. The moderator will ask the audience to rank the scene on a scale of one to five using their applause—with five as the highest possible score.

For example, if an audience member believes a scene deserves a one, they would cheer when the referee announces, “ONE!” If they believe a scene deserves a two, they would cheer when the referee announces, “TWO!”, etc. The number with the loudest amount of applause is the score for that round.

  • Well, the rules change a little each year depending on the number of teams.

However, every team competes against one another at least once in the early rounds, and their cumulative scores for every performance determines which teams advance to the finals!

  • The scum box is a beloved box placed on the heads of improvisers—or patrons—who get too rowdy during a scene or with their suggestions. It doesn’t come out every performance, but TheatreSports can get pretty intense!

Did you know we’re the only theatre in the southeast certified to perform TheatreSports? We’re part of an international cohort and darn proud of it.
